One of Google’s best-known tools for businesses across the world and local marketing efforts is Google Business Profiles. But you might better remember this as “Google My Business.” Though, in actuality, this tool has changed its name numerous times… starting out as Google Local Business Center back in 2005, then Google Places, and Google+ Local.

Google Business Profiles allow businesses of all sizes to offer important information consumers want, including hours of operation, holiday hours, photos of your location, product info, and various tags (like accessible parking, woman owned, LGTQ+ Safe Space, and so on). Over the years, GMB/GBP has become a staple of local search engine optimization, a valuable tool for small businesses, a way for people to find local businesses on maps, and more. But you may have noticed some changes beyond the name in recent months.

Why You Need to Switch to GA4

For as long as most people can remember, we’ve been using Google Analytics to track website data, visits, sessions, geolocation, demographics, and so on. Google Analytics has undergone various changes over the years… and GA4 is no different.

In October 2020, GA4 (or Google Analytics 4) was introduced as an updated version of your tried-and-true analytics. It came with a handful of significant changes to how we view and report data. In March 2022, Google announced that they would shut down Universal Analytics on July 1, 2023 – after which everyone will need GA4.

Google’s Helpful Content Update

In Mid-August 2022, Google announced that they would be rolling out the “Helpful Content” update. This appeared to be a reasonably positive idea based on the name alone. But what is “Helpful Content,” and how will it affect the internet landscape? 

In Danny Sullivan’s Google blog post, he expressed that this update to Search would “tackle content that seems to have been primarily created for ranking well in search engines rather than to help or inform people.” When it comes to content, we’ve been expressing for years now how increasingly important it is to write content for humans, not robots. And that targeting natural language and answering legitimate questions is more important than chasing specific terms because of volume.

But is that enough to satiate the moniker of “helpful content?”
