Local Service Ads: What They Cost, Who They Work For, and Who Should Skip Them

Google Guaranteed sits above everything else in the results and charges per lead rather than per click. That is excellent for some trades and a tax on others, and which one you are is mostly decided by your average job value.

Efferent Media is a Long Island digital marketing agency, family owned and based in Lindenhurst since 2011. Articles here describe published platform policy and our own measured results. They are marketing guidance, not legal advice.

Local Service Ads are worth it when your average job is large enough to absorb a per lead price you do not control, and they are a slow leak when it is not. That is most of the decision, and it is decidable in about ten minutes with numbers you already have.

The product sits above everything else on the page, including search ads, carries a Google Guaranteed badge that customers do recognize, and charges per lead rather than per click. For the trades it covers, that placement is the most valuable real estate in local search.

What You Are Actually Buying

Three things, and it is worth separating them because only one is the placement.

Position. Above the search ads, above the map pack, on a phone screen that shows very little else. This is the part everyone is buying.

The badge. Google Guaranteed requires license and insurance verification and a background check, and it carries a limited money-back guarantee from Google to the customer. For a homeowner choosing between strangers, that is a real signal, and it is one competitors cannot fake.

A different pricing model. You pay per lead, not per click. Whether that is good depends entirely on the arithmetic below, and it is the part most businesses do not examine before signing up.

The Ten Minute Decision

Take three numbers you have.

  1. Average job value.
  2. Your close rate on inbound leads. Actual, not aspirational.
  3. What you currently pay for a qualified lead from search, if you know it.

Multiply job value by close rate. That is what an average lead is worth to you in revenue. Now compare that to a per lead cost and ask what share of the job the lead is eating, before materials and labor.

For a trade where a job is several thousand dollars, a per lead price in the normal range is a small fraction of the revenue and the math is comfortable even with a moderate close rate. For a trade where a job is a few hundred dollars, the same per lead price is a serious share of the ticket and the model only works at a close rate most businesses do not achieve.

That is the whole test. Everything else is a refinement of it.

Who It Tends to Work For on Long Island

Emergency and high urgency trades. Plumbing, HVAC failures, water damage, electrical. High intent, large tickets, and a customer who calls the first credible name. The badge matters more here than anywhere because the customer is choosing fast.

High ticket home improvement. Roofing, siding, windows. The per lead cost is small against the job, and the placement reaches people at the top of a long decision.

Trades where the license itself is the differentiator. The verification is doing real work in a category where customers worry about being scammed.

Who Should Probably Skip It

Low ticket, high volume service. The per lead economics do not hold, and the effort of disputing bad leads becomes a real cost of its own.

Anyone whose close rate on inbound is genuinely low. Fix the follow-up first. Local Service Ads charge you the same whether you answer in two minutes or two days, which makes them an expensive way to find out your response process is broken. The five minute window applies harder here than anywhere precisely because you already paid for the lead.

Businesses that cannot service the full area they would be shown in. You pay for the lead regardless of whether you take the job.

Anyone who cannot answer the phone during the hours they run. The lead is charged on the call connecting. A missed call is frequently a charged lead you got nothing from.

If You Run It, Run It Properly

Four things separate the accounts that do well from the ones that quietly lose money.

  • Dispute every bad lead, every week. Wrong service, out of area, spam, unreachable. It takes a minute each and it compounds. Businesses that never dispute pay noticeably more per usable lead than businesses that do.
  • Keep the service list tight. Every service you enable widens what you are charged for. Enable what you want, not what you can technically do.
  • Answer the phone, and record it. Response rate feeds ranking within the product, and the recordings tell you whether the leads are bad or the handling is.
  • Keep reviews current. Review count and recency both influence position within the unit.

It Is Not a Replacement

The common mistake after a good first month is to cut search spending because Local Service Ads are cheaper per lead. They usually are, and they also cover a narrow band of query types and are capped by how much of that inventory exists.

Run them together, measure them separately, and let each one be judged on cost per job rather than cost per lead. If you are not yet able to measure to that depth, that is the more valuable project and it changes more than this decision will.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Local Service Ads replace Google Ads?
No. They sit above search ads and cover a narrow set of queries. Most businesses that run both find they serve different intent, and turning search off because Local Service Ads are working usually costs more volume than it saves.
How long does the Google Guaranteed check take?
Background and license checks typically run a couple of weeks and can run longer when a license needs verifying. Start well before the season you want it for, because the approval cannot be hurried.
Can you dispute a bad lead?
Yes, and you should, every time. Wrong service, out of area, spam and unreachable all qualify. Businesses that dispute consistently pay meaningfully less than businesses that never do, and it takes a minute per lead.
